Role description:

We are looking for graduate students to lead and moderate an online discussion forum for sixth form students.

The Oxford Pathways Programme is a college-led initiative which works to increase the number of applicants to Oxford from students at state schools which rarely send candidates. More information about the programme is available at www.ox.ac.uk/pathways. The discussion forums are part of the year 12 element of the programme. Our aim is to encourage students who attended our events in March to continue to engage with Oxford, and to provide them with academic stimulus beyond the curriculum. The forums are intended to compliment, rather than contribute to, the A Level syllabus, and should help students to think about their subject in a way that is useful for university-level study (and university applications).

We are looking for Graduate Tutors to lead discussions in the following subject areas: Mathematical Sciences; Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; Medical Sciences; Humanities; Literature; Social Sciences; Law.

Graduate Tutors will be responsible for finding appropriate academic material, leading and guiding the discussion, and constructively criticising students’ responses. Training will be provided on the online forums, and guidance will be given on the design of content. Graduate Tutors will be expected to moderate the discussion for two weeks in late June or July (there is some flexibility on the exact dates). In total we anticipate the role will take approximately 30 hours (split between preparation time and time spent moderating the forum). Graduate Tutors will receive a payment of £400 for their work.

Person specification:

Essential

- Studying for a research degree at Oxford University, or holding a post-doctoral appointment

- Enthusiastic about communicating an academic subject to a wider audience

- Reasonable level of computer literacy

- High standard of written English

Desirable

- Understanding of Oxford’s undergraduate courses

- Experience of teaching tutorials or participating in the interview process

- Experience of working with young people

- Experience of creating course content

Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.

To apply for one of these posts, please email:

- A brief CV

- A covering letter explaining how you fulfil the requirements of the specification

- The names and contact details of two referees (references will be requested if you are offered the position)

- An indication of which subject area(s) you wish to be considered for

- A brief description of a topic from within your subject which you think would be suitable for use in a discussion forum (no more than 200 words).

Applications should be sent by email to pathways@admin.ox.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 31 May. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
